Welcome to the Shubin Lab
What do fossil expeditions to Earth’s polar regions have in common with analyses of transcriptomes, gene regulation function and developmental biology? Together, these approaches can tell us about the great transitions in vertebrate evolution. Recent efforts of the lab have looked at fin development and regeneration, the transformation of fins into limbs, the origin of terrestrial feeding, the origin of vertebrate appendages, and the biology of frog metamorphosis.
Current fieldwork takes us to the Devonian rocks of Ellesmere Island in the High Arctic of Canada as well as the Transantarctic Mountains of Antarctica in search of the earliest creatures to walk on land as well as their relatives. Using high resolution CT scanning, the lab explores the structure and kinematics of the skeleton and its functional evolution during the Late Devonian.
Deploying a range of molecular approaches to assess gene expression, cell lineage, gene regulation, chromatin dynamics, and gene function, the lab explores the development of the vertebrate skeleton.

New paper by Dr. Katie Mika et al. on the microbiome of skate eggs out now.
In this study, Mika et al. take the first steps towards filling in gap on microbial transmission from parent to offspring by investigating the microbiota associated with embryonic development in the little skate, Leucoraja erinacea, a common North Atlantic species and...
Congratulations to Dr. Tom Stewart who will be joining Penn State Department of Biology
We are excited for Dr. Tom Stewart who will be joining the Biology department at Penn State as an Assistant Professor in 2022. His lab will study the evolution and development of fins and limbs, with the aim of understanding the basis of morphological novelty. He is...
Congratulations to Dr. Shiri Kult on being named a Zuckerman Scholar
The Zuckerman STEM Leadership Program is proud to welcome its cohort of scholars for the 2021-2022 academic year. This impressive group, 46 leaders in their respective STEM fields from the US, Canada and Israel, will focus on research, make new discoveries and lead...
